Buy and sell safely

Most private car sales go smoothly. These habits keep it that way, whether you're buying your next commuter or selling your old one in Washington.

Meet in public

Daytime, a busy place, and never alone.

Check the paperwork

The title name matches the seller's ID. The VIN matches the car.

Pay traceably

At a bank. Never by wire, gift cards, or crypto.

If you're buying

  • Meet in a busy public placeDaytime, lots of people around. Some police departments offer marked spots for online-sale exchanges.
  • Get a pre-purchase inspectionAn independent mechanic can spot problems a test drive won't. Honest sellers welcome it.
  • Run the VINA vehicle history report shows reported accidents, title brands, and odometer records.
  • Match the title to the sellerThe name on the title should match the seller's ID. Ask about any lien before paying.
  • Pay in a way you can traceNever pay by wire transfer, gift card, or crypto, and never send a deposit for a car you haven't seen.

If you're selling

  • Screen buyers by message firstEvery buyer who messages you on GearKeys has confirmed their email and phone number. Still, real buyers ask about the car. Vague or scripted messages are a warning sign.
  • Ride along on test drivesSnap a photo of the buyer's driver's license first, and don't hand over the keys alone.
  • Take payment safelyCash counted at your bank, or a cashier's check you verify with the issuing bank before signing.
  • Sign the title over correctlyFill in the buyer's name, the sale date, the price, and the odometer reading. Keep a copy.
  • File a Report of SaleIn Washington, report the sale to the Department of Licensing within 5 business days. Check dol.wa.gov for current steps.

Common scams to walk away from

Overpayment checks

A buyer sends more than the price and asks you to refund the difference. The check bounces later.

Verification code requests

Anyone asking for a code texted to your phone is trying to take over your accounts. GearKeys will never ask you for a code.

Too-good prices, no meetups

A low price plus a seller who can't meet and wants a deposit first is a classic setup.
